HOW HAVE THE AUSSIES FAIRED AT CLUB LEVEL
Promotions - Starting in England and the Championship level, Newcastle are going up to the EPL. A couple of Aussies, Brad Inman and Alex Baird are in the youth set-up there. Inman had a very solid season with 21 appearances and 14 goals from midfield in the U18 team, also 8 appearances in the reserves. Has been in the senior squad. League One has seen Leeds win automatic promotion to the Championship. Aussies are prominent there with Neil Kilkenny (35 apps.) and Patrick Kisnorbo (29 apps.) featuring prominently, with Kisnorbo suffering an Achilles injury late in the campaign.
Mention also to Socceroo Shane Lowry who made 11 appearances on loan this season. Will be great to see a little more of these guys in the Championship next season. In League Two, Aldershot remain in the play offs. Keeper Jamie Young plays in goals there after a mid season transfer. York City are set the play Oxford in the Blue Square final, the winner promoted to league football. Young defender, James Meredith, has made 45 appearances during the season for York.
Big news in the Italian leagues for our Aussies connections. In Serie B, Carl Valeri’s Sassuolo remain in the hunt for automatic promotion with three games remaining. He has made 9 appearances after his mid-season transfer. One player who will be in Serie B next season is Adrian Madaschi after his team Portosummaga secured promotion from Serie C1B. Adrian made 28 appearances for the season, playing every minute of all of those games – amazing contribution in defence.
In Turkey, and the second division, Adanaspor are involved in the promotion play-offs. Defender Ersan Gulum has made 30 starts for the club this season, would be great to see another Aussie in the Super League in Turkey. Former Melbourne Victory youth player, Dimi Hatzimouratis, is the only Aussie playing in Cyprus. His club Alki Larnaca have won promotion to the top level with Dimi a regular starter over the past few months. A mention to Nathan Burns. While on loan, he was a huge part of the success at Kerkyra that has seen them return to the Super League in Greece.
Relegations - Richard Garcia’s Hull City stay in the EPL was relatively short, back to the Championship next season. Outside of that, our Aussies in England all managed to stay up. A different story on the continent. In Italy, Siena have been relegated from Serie A. Richard Porta spent the year out on loan in Uruguay, but is contracted to Siena. While former South Melbourne attacking midfielder Francesco Stella is in the Primavera team.
Another Aussie playing Primavera is Adrian Ucchino at Frosinone. They are in the relegation zone with three games to play. Nurnberg in Germany are in a relegation play-off, both Matt Spiranovic and Dario Vidosic are contracted there although they have been out on loan since January. The Aussies in division one in Scotland are facing relegation or have been relegated, but many of those players were on loan deals or have transferred already (Storey, Visconte, McGowan). Daniel Georgievski’s Medimurje have been relegated from the top division in Croatia. In Denmark, Nathan Coe’s team, Randers, are two points clear of relegation with one game to go. Although on loan deals that have now expired, Bruce Djite and Nikita Rukavytsya have been involved with clubs that either have been relegated or in a playoff.
Please note that some of these fixtures will have been completed by time of publication.
